Count Dracula is a highly atmospheric adaptation of the classic Bram Stoker novel, directed with panache by auteur Jess Franco (Venus in Furs, The Diabolical Dr. Z).

Screen icon Christopher Lee (Horror of Dracula, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring) portrays the titular Count Dracula, who flees the cold confines of his Carpathian castle for the shores of England, where he must feed on the blood of beautiful Lucy (Soledad Miranda, Vampyros Le! sbos) and Mina (Maria Rohm, 99Women) in order to grow youthful and stay alive.

Also featuring excellent performances by Herbert Lom (The Ladykillers) as Van Helsing and Klaus Kinski (Nosferatu the Vampyre) as Renfield, as well as an ominous score by Bruno Nicolai (Eugenie de Sade, The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave), Count Dracula is presented for the first time on DVD in the U.S.

Jess Franco, the Spanish director known for soft-core films featuring vixens in various precarious situations, successfully incorporates Bram Stoker's Dracula into his repertoire with Count Dracula. Starring Hammer's Dracula Christopher Lee, this film is unrelated to the Hammer films, to its credit. This film may be the most accurate telling of Stoker's classic vampire story, so faithful is it to the novel, even to include many of the book's lines in the script. With an array of truly Gothic, medieval sets, and a cast well-versed i! n horror, including Klaus Kinski (Werner Herzog's Nosferatu! ) as Renfield, and Soledad Miranda (Vampyros Lesbos) as Lucy, Count Dracula authentically captures Stoker's careful blend of physical monstrosity and sexual fetish to portray the Count's quest for eternal life. For example, few vampire films besides Franco's take time to feature Lucy and her lover Quincy's blood transfusions that reinforce blood's metaphoric connection to sexual desire. Moreover, Maria Rohm plays Mina Harker with the proper innocence to serve as a foil character to her promiscuous friend, Lucy. Dr. Van Helsing, in this film, gets ample opportunity to sleuth vampirism. Franco relays the story of this Transylvanian count who leaves his castle in the Carpathian mountains for a house in England by accentuating the sexual aspects of the plot, which is what any Franco fan would hope for. Additionally enlightening is this DVD's featurette, in which Franco describes his theories about vampire films. --Trinie Dalton

I Can't Think Straight

  • I CAN'T THINK STRAIGHT (DVD MOVIE)
Extremist groups waged a campaign of death threats, arson and riots to stop the production of this controversial film, but director Deepa Mehta would not be silenced. Set against Gandhi's rise to power, Water tells the profoundly moving story of Chuyia, an Indian girl married and widowed at eight years old, who is sent away to a home where Hindu widows must live in penitence. Chuyia's feisty presence deeply affects the other residents, forcing each to confront their faith and society's prejudices. In the pressure cooker of apartheid South Africa, free-spirited Amina meets Miriam, a traditional wife and mother. Their unexpected attraction pushes Miriam to question the rules that bind her, forcing both women to face outrage and violent disapproval. The CD soundtrack includes tracks from Natacha Atlas, Leonie Casanova, Nadine Khouri and composer Raimond Mirza.

Enter the secret and salacious world of show business through the back door. Lucy Spiller (Courteney Cox) makes the headlines as the woman Hollywood loves to hate in the darkly comedic drama Dirt. As editor-in-chief of Tinseltown’s most influential magazines, Spiller can make or break the stars. Her obsession with the seamy side of the entertainment industry gives her power over every celebrity in the biz, but leaves her helpless against her own demons. It’s "delirious, dizzy, decadent and alto! gether delicious," raves The Miami Herald. Dig deep with Dirt: The Complete First Season. Experience every sumptuous episode, plus exciting bonus features you can’t see anywhere else, in this 4-disc box set. It’s tempting television at its best.Hot-wired into the tabloid zeitgeist, Dirt is good, lurid fun. Courteney Cox, in a bold departure from Monica on Friends, stars as Lucy Spiller, editor of Dirt magazine. Relentless, high-strung Lucy is part Ben Bradlee and part Bonnie Fuller. She's a stickler for journalistic integrity with a basic instinct for the scandalous "get." "There's actual reporting in what we do," she rallies her reporters. "The only defense we have is the truth." Lucy is saddled with a clichéd personal life (abandonment issues, intimacy issues, blah, blah, blah). She is way more fun to watch at work when she's blackmailing celebs to deliver scoops by threatening to reveal their sexual peccadilloes, stun-gunning one-night-stands,! or betraying a loved one to score an exclusive, career-wrecki! ng cover story. Her go-to photographer and best friend is Don Konkey (Ian Hart, an uncanny John Lennon in Backbeat and The Hours and Times) a functioning schizophrenic prone to hallucinations, but who will do anything for Lucy, even sever his own finger to gain admittance to a hospital where an unblemished Christian pop star is being mysteriously kept under wraps. Konkey is the voice and heart of Dirt. His introductory episode recaps are a highlight ("No offense, but you should be up on this by now," he states in episode 7). Waiting in the wings on Lucy's staff is Willa (Alex Breckenridge), young, green, and hungry. She becomes a much more provocative presence as she joins the dark side as the season progresses.

Dirt could use sharper writing, but it's savvy enough when it comes to parsing Hollywood-speak. A celebrity's so-called "exhaustion" is translated by Lucy to mean "rehab or a psychotic break." Dirt drops A-list names (Clooney, Britney),! but for a series set in Hollywood, it's light on actual celebrities (director David Fincher and a self-deprecating Christopher Knight and Adrienne Curry appear as themselves). Instead, we get unconvincing fictional celebrities such as wash-out actor Holt McLaren (Josh Stewart), who gets his shot at superstardom by making the same kind of pact with Lucy that John Cassavetes made with the coven in Rosemary's Baby. Just one scoop begins a downward spiral for his sitcom-actress girlfriend (Laura Allen) and her best friend, an actress with an ill-timed pregnancy (Shannyn Sossamon). Also getting down and dirty are Rick Fox as a compromised basketball superstar, Wayne Brady as a cultured thug, and, in the season finale, Jennifer Aniston as Lucy's rival (and then some, although their much-hyped onscreen kiss is really much ado about nothing). An FX series, Dirt shovels on the network's envelope-pushing profane language and graphic sex scenes. It should clean up on DV! D. --Donald Liebenson

There are 12.4 million destitute children in India and yet only about 3000 legal adoptions happen in a year!

There are certainly many reasons for this startling fact…but is this justified? Can we as parents, as people who a! re mobilizing ourselves to become a super, liberalized economy really afford to close our minds to this picture?

Adoption in India is mired by red tape, poor social acceptance, illegal practices and many misconceptions about the process itself. These issues and many other questions is what the book covers- right from the causes behind this dismal scenario to actual case stories of adoption and various organisations involved in this cause. This book presents a picture of the still-not-so-used word “adoption in India.

The book caters to:
1)social and child welfare workers and interested individuals
2)the many interested but unsure couples/aspiring parents who want a baby, but are not aware of the process/implications/issues involved
2)parents who have already adopted and are seeking some answers
4)adoptees themselves

Adoption is one of the best forms of rehabilitating a destitute child. It is the most complet! e form of rehabilitation which provides a highly satisfactory ! solution to those seeking the experience of bringing up a child and for the child itself. Adoption is an option to many people who are unable to have a child due to medical/infertility/other problems as well as those who may not want to have biological child out of choice. The cherished hope is that many more people are made aware and are able to contribute in some way towards this very fulfilling cause.

It's a social awareness book. The articles are compiled by Catalysts for Social Action (CSA), who is producing this book. Articles are written by experts in the field, by celebrities and parents who have adopted and also by adopted children who are now adults.

The book consists of 28 articles across five sections:

1) The first section is about the the joy of adoption- first hand accounts and interviews from adoptive parents and celebrities about their experience with adoption. Articles cover experiences around their process of assimilation, soci! etal assimilation experiences, single parents' experiences, parents who have brought up a biological child and have also adopted, etc.
2) This section covers the current adoption scenario in India - facts and figures, laws, organizations involved, corporate viewpoints, NGO view points and the process of adoption. .
3) The third section consists of articles on adoptive parenting- the various stages of development, addressing adoption related issues, support groups, telling the child about adoption, adoption of a special needs child, the appropriate adoption language, etc. is comprehensively explained through personal and expert writings.
4) The fourth section explores the concept of closure which most adopted children seek and their deep desire to understand why they were relinquished.
5) The final section provides a comprehensive list of adoption agencies in the country.

The book will carry photographs of children from various orphanages! in India and also some adoptive parents. The photographs will! be in b lack and white. The jacket will be in color with spot lamination. The book is in standard paperback size.

Our objective is to give two messages “ first that adoption is a life altering, win-win option that is very worth-while for both the child and parents. Second, since this is the case, why is the adoption rate so low and what can we do about it? We would like this message to go to as wide an audience as possible.
